It could be said that bodybuilders are a little crazy with their supplementation. Whilst there is no doubt that many bodybuilders probably over do it, the benefits of L-Glutamine to a bodybuilder go way past more than mere supplementation, but could make or break your results. Yes, it could be that important.
L-Glutamine is an amino acid which is used by our immune system as fuel. I don’t believe I need to tell you the importance of maintaining a healthy immune system, so I won’t get into that, it bought what I will get into is how a lack of L-Glutamine can adversely affect your muscle mass.
L-Glutamine is key in muscular protein synthesis
When you train hard, your immune system can become compromised from a lack of L-Glutamine. What the body then does is begin to draw L-Glutamine out of our muscles to refuel itself. Because L-Glutamine is key in muscular protein synthesis, the less L-Glutamine in our muscles, the less our muscles can absorb protein – and the less they can repair and grow.
This can lead to overtraining, and a loss of muscle mass – along with the negative effects which go with a low immune system.
If you find yourself feeling worn out, becoming ill, and losing muscle mass, the symptoms could well stem from a lack of L-Glutamine.
